By KV Kurmanath
Updated - November 05, 2026 at 05:55 PM. | Hyderabad:Chiranjeevi Phanindra, Founder and CEO of Cosmoserve Space, explaining the challenge of space debris at the startup’s new facility in Hyderabad on Thursday.
Spacetech startup Cosmoserve Space has opened Base 1, a facility to design, build, test and operate systems for satellite servicing and space debris recovery. The opening follows a $6 million seed funding round, in which Japan’s Rebright Partners joined Aranya Holdings, Naandi Ventures, AUM Ventures and Shakti VC, taking the company’s total funding to over $9 million.
The facility was inaugurated here on Thursday by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh, who joined virtually and Telangana IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu.
The facility houses an orbital rendezvous and capture lab, a space robotics lab, a clean room for satellite integration and a mission simulation and control centre. Besides removing debris, it will support in-orbit repair and refuelling of satellites, according to Chiranjeevi Phanindra, Founder and CEO of Cosmoserve Space.
Reducing Imports
The company, which sources close to 60 per cent of its mission components locally, plans to develop more critical technologies in-house to reduce imports of optics, avionics and space-grade electronics.
Under its Dual Spacecraft Architecture, a larger Orbital Service Station acts as a logistics hub in space, while a smaller Autonomous Service Vehicle travels to satellites to capture, repair or remove them. The company said the two spacecraft are designed to service up to 100 satellites, potentially bringing servicing costs down from about $10 million to below $1 million a satellite.
“Debris is becoming the limiting factor for every nation’s space ambitions, including India’s. Base 1 is where we build the capability to keep orbits usable, for Gaganyaan, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station and every satellite that follows,” he said.
Space City
Its first payload, Mission Embrace, flew aboard Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 rocket in July, though its robotic capture petals did not deploy as planned. The company plans to re-fly the mission and conduct a full-scale debris capture demonstration in 2027.
Sridhar Babu said Hyderabad was home to over 30 spacetech companies and that the State Government was planning an exclusive Space City within the upcoming Bharat Future City.
